What Is
Bit Fitting?
Bit fitting is the process of assessing a horse's individual mouth conformation - tongue thickness, palate height, bar sensitivity, and overall anatomy - and matching those characteristics to an appropriate bit.
A bit that fits poorly can cause discomfort, resistance, training difficulties, and long-term behavioural issues. A well-fitted bit allows the horse to work comfortably, respond willingly, and communicate clearly with the rider.
Bit fitting is not about finding the most expensive bit - it is about finding the right one for your specific horse.

why it matters
Three Reasons to Fit Properly
01
comfort
Your horse cannot tell you the bit hurts. Resistance, head-tossing, mouth-gaping, and above-the-bit behaviour are often signs of poor fit - not poor training.
02
performance
When a horse is comfortable in the contact, they can focus on the work. Correct bit fit removes unnecessary tension and allows for genuine connection between horse and rider.
03
longevity
Chronic discomfort from a poorly fitted bit can create lasting behavioural patterns and physical tension. Addressing fit early protects your horse's long-term well-being.
